The Creative Spirit

from Spark to Finish

The goal of life is to make your heartbeat match the beat of the Universe, to match your nature with Nature.
— Joseph Campbell

Far too often, and for far too many, the creation process remains a mystery.

If inspiration is the propelling force of the creative engine, what Ignites it? Where does the first Spark come from? Whence does the melody which the composer turns into song? How can the writer find her way out of the blank page? How can the actor find his way into the soul of a character?

Countless Creatives have recounted the moment when inspiration hits, as if it were an inexplicable burst arising from somewhere in our mind, perhaps our body or maybe even our soul. Elizabeth Gilbert believes there is a fountain where we seek it and from whence we receive it. Joseph Campbell spoke of our "Bliss Station" as a physical place for us to disconnect from our daily personas, reconnect with our inner nature and find our creative bliss. It is not uncommon to attribute the act of creation to a connection with the universe around us but even more innately so the connection, the integration of our inner and outer world as one. This holistic ebb and flow, of wholeness, environment and observer, creature and creator, dance and dancer, inextricably interconnected in the movement of creation.

And if the creative process thrives in this universal presence, one must then be able to align one’s self with this most primordial of all forces. Creation being less of a physical process (this is not to discount the self-evident fact of all that transpires in chipping away at the marble until there’s nothing left but the masterpiece within) than an outward expansion of one’s innermost truth. This most essential tool of creation, innate to all and specific to each, becomes then the artist’s highest attainment. For even beyond their technique and craft, in order to bring about something entirely unique, one must deep dive into the infinite well of their own uniqueness, becoming profoundly acquainted with their innermost essence.

We know that in life we often disconnect from what is essential; taking upon ourselves layers and layers of obligations, duties, fears...  loads and loads of unnecessary extra weight which bogs us down leading us to our eventual disconnection, where creativity ceases to be the ever present constant in our lives; and then even when we summon the strength to reignite its flames, we no longer surmise it in its fullest potential.  And unlike in the stories we create there are no magic potions, no Abracadabras, no metaphysical shortcuts to get us back to our infinite source of inspiration. We can't force our way back in, we can only fine-tune ourselves back to our inner nature; sharpening every tool at the service of keeping the channel open, fostering every skill at the service of this undying light we all carry.

And so fostering and sharpening and fine-tuning we must; that is the way in, that is the path forward. We must let go of our baggage, drop the mask, clear the clutter and commit to boldly go where no one else has ever gone, or can ever go - our own inner depth. And there in this most vulnerable and darkest of caves we shall face our fears, slay our inner doubts, and unshackle ourselves from the old; making our way back anew with our own elixir, our own individual answers, and on our own authentic path to creative fulfillment.

about me (sort of)

Or How to Harness Fuel out of "Failure"

Is this the part where we get a third-person chronological list of accomplishments that ends with "He resides in Los Angeles with the love of his life, their three little hooligans and Newton, the hugest cat ever"? Or is it where I should get all self-important and describe how my methods are the second coming of sliced bread and if you don't get some you're gonna miss out... and you won't have anything to hold your peanut butter and jelly with.
Perhaps is best if we start with the accomplishments, keep it short and sweet...
But if you stumbled upon here on your detour towards your highest creative aspiration you're not that interested in what I've done, you're probably way more intrigued about what I can do for you. That makes two of us. To work with Creatives and show them how to go from struggling and stagnant to creating and contributing is my true passion and highest calling.
However if I only tell you about my method and live out all the madness, you're gonna be missing all the best parts. It's a story of overcoming a lifetime of bad choices and perpetual fucking it up, of transforming limiting circumstances into the very conditions for growth, of finding universal and practical solutions for most problems assailing creatives and of transforming my individual pursuit for authentic self-expression into a mission to ensure that every creative unlocks and realizes their full creative potential. Starting to sound too self-involved and self-important? I promise you this is not about me, if you listen closely you will soon realize this story is about the only person that matters right now...
...this is a story about you.
I believe that for better or worse we are all mirrors, guides and teachers for one another. Walking metaphors, if we can only extract the essence, the lesson, we are all inadvertently here to teach one another, so I share this as part raison d'etre, part CV through the school of hard knocks and part cautionary tale -  there's no reason for anyone to go about going about it the way I was going about it.
So for my "once upon a time", I submit to you 3 interviews where I spill the beans, my guts and the milk we are not supposed to cry over:

  • A couple of years back when I was transitioning from full-time Creator into my Creative Consultation & Coaching practice I had the privilege of sitting down with Dr. G for the filming of his Show aptly titled Backstory. Click on the vimeo link for some why's and wherefores from yours truly, hang around for great insights from Creatives Extraordinaire's Hannah Lux Davis & Kyle Newacheck:

  • For a back and forth between me and a most incredible human, Ryan Murry on his most excellent Podcast "In Touch Valley Talk", where we dive into some of the work I do, why I do it and why he decided to point his mic at me - SPOILER ALERT: We've known each other for almost as long as I've been in this country.
  • For more on the incredible work he does through his podcast and beyond, building community and bringing a message of purposeful living, checkout his entire podcast series on Itunes, Google Play and at http://www.intouchmediagroup.net

  • And for my Creative Journey through La La Land, here's me kicking it with my buddy and fellow filmmaker Desmond Devenish on his terrific Podcast "The Gunnison Group Podcast" (old headshot with longish tresses not included):

Guidance

whether through consultation, coaching or collaboration I'm here to assist, guide and support you in bringing that seed idea into fruition.

Guidance

whether through consultation, coaching or collaboration I'm here to assist, guide and support you in bringing that seed idea into fruition.

consultation

ideation. inspiration.                            incubation. idealization.

Consultation is what I call the least intense of all the work I do... from a client's perspective. You still get my undivided focus, full strategic arsenal and commitment to serve you in a way that streamlines, refines and improves your performance; it's just delivered in a shorter window, demanding less time, commitment and investment on your part.

Consultations are usually a one-and-done engagement. It can range from having me as a speaker to meeting one-on-one in a strategy session for your individual creative performance.

Whether you're an individual wanting to test drive my methods before committing to full scale coaching or you have a project you feel just needs some laser-focus fine-tuning before it gets rolling, a consultation is a great way to get us both working together to solve what's currently most pressing in your creative journey.

coaching

mentorship for your mastery.          guidance on your journey.

Coaching is growth. Is having someone in your corner to pick out your blindspots, trouble shoot your road blocks and challenges as they occur, constantly refining your performance, mindset and goals to bring out the best in you. Coaching is having a guide always pointing you towards your true north and never letting you shy away from your greatness.

Coaching is best employed by individuals who are ready to shorten the gap between where they are and where they wanna go. It's supporting you to set that destination so far beyond your current reach that you must become the best, sharpest, most resilient version of yourself in order to achieve it.

Coaching is not a feel good, inspirational hand-holding affair; although there's plenty to feel good about and be inspired by as the results start to pile on. Coaching is hard work; it's self-exploratory, sometimes painful, often uncomfortable work. It eradicates mediocrity, elevates your floor and gets you to breakthrough what you once thought of as your ceiling.

Coaching can be done in small groups, via phone, skype or live and one-on-one. If Coaching is for you, I'd love to get you a 30 minute complementary consultation with me.

In this introductory Strategy Session we will focus on your main struggle, get clear about ways  to optimize your processes, leaving you with a clear path to follow.

Collaboration

synergy. team building.                      from idea to realization.

Collaboration can be as simple as a storytelling meeting or as complex as the soup-to-nuts production of a movie.

Maybe you need your copy revised or rewritten. Perhaps your script needs a "punch-up", or maybe you need a script. Perhaps a storytelling meeting to create the foundation for your project, company or brand. Or maybe you need a producer or creative director to make it happen on time, on budget and to your specifications.

From brand content to screenwriting, development to prototyping to delivery. If you, your team or your project needs an injection of creative problem solving or an infusion of storytelling depth I'd love to hear from you.

Or maybe you need my coaching full time, on retainer, speed dial, on tour or in the room with you.

Collaboration can be one of my services or all of them rolled into one. It can be full time, full blast or sparingly.

Here is where we can abandon all previous blueprints to create our own. You set the parameters, the needs, the goal and we set our sails. Your dream is our destination.
